The Alice Saunders affordable housing development aligns with the Brightside Community Homes Foundation mandate to build and foster resilient communities for those who struggle to meet market housing demands.
The new Passive House residential development replaces an existing apartment building with two new structures designed for seniors, families and people with disabilities. The design is driven by the mature trees and significant slope of the site, leading to the creation of an L-shaped block and an I-shaped block set atop a single level of below grade parking.
The development’s materiality is inspired by the vernacular, with a warm textured lower mass wrapping the street, punctuated by lively balconies, providing a tactile familiarity, with a cleanly rendered block behind that serves as a visually lighter counterpoint. The project is designed and constructed to the low energy international Passive House standard.
