Working with Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Ryder has drawn up exciting and ambitious proposals to transform Stockton High Street into a new 2.5ha urban park.
The proposals demolish the 1970s Castlegate Shopping Centre, opening up access and views to the River Tees from the High Street. A new 40m wide land bridge spans the narrowed A1305 Riverside Road, enabling the new park to seamlessly spill over to the riverside. A terraced arena is created to provide an events space, taking advantage of the riverside backdrop.
Art and sculpture are integrated across the park, providing a journey of discovery. New food and beverage developments are located along the riverside, taking advantage of the waterfront setting and encouraging people to spent time in the town. A play park is focused on the High Street with informal play spread through the park. At the heart of the park is a large central lawn with a pavilion providing opportunities to host large events.
